Dashwood Avenue is set in 1953, and life for Kiralče Nottingham, the main character, is dull, boring, and completely lacking in excitement. You can't get much of a smaller, quaint, seaside town than Upper-Chern, South Carolina, where she lives. No one moves in or out and summer renters are a real treat. The only kids Kiralče's age are a rowdy group that comes every summer. The oldest, George, is also Kiralče's special foe. Girls will appreciate the good, handsome, and unique George who becomes Kiralče's special friend after starting out an enemy.
Then the elusive Slater family moves in. At first it seems they are the friends Kiralče dreamed about. But everything is not as it seems. With them come mystery, trouble, and adventure and Kiralče finds herself right in the middle of it! There is a strange sailor that is following and spying on the Slaters. The Slater family seems terrified, but will tell Kiralče nothing. Many rumors and stories float around that this sailor used to be in love with Mrs. Slater. Kiralče doesn't know what to believe. Kiralče knows they're hiding something. When a mysterious, distinguished businessman appears in town, Kiralče and George team up to investigate. Following clues and listening into conversations, they are led right to the scene of the crime and into danger. All the while, Kiralče is growing from awkward tomboy to lovely young lady and George is leaving his old life as a pale, spoiled rich boy, to a tanned, thin, and wiry fisherman. Girls and boys will appreciate the growing up process portrayed. While this is directed to pre-teen girls, the whole family can enjoy it. With good morals, fun and realistic characters, and a heart-stopping mystery, this book will be well loved by young girls and boys alike and is suitably appropriate for them. |
